Board repair before board replacement

Many MacBooks that won't turn on have one failed component on the logic board — a shorted capacitor, a damaged power or charging chip, or a corroded connector after a spill. At Alfa-Fix Central we find that part and repair or replace it at component level, instead of replacing the whole board.

That matters for your data as well as your budget. On recent MacBooks the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted, so swapping the board means your files go with the old one. Repairing the board you have is often the only way to keep them.

Spilled something on your MacBook? Do this now

1. Hold the power button until it switches off. Unplug the charger.
2. Don't switch it on again to check whether it still works.
3. Open the lid wide and turn it upside down in a tent shape so liquid can drain out.
4. Skip the hairdryer and the rice. A hairdryer's air pushes liquid further in and its heat can damage parts, and rice doesn't dry a logic board.
5. Bring it to Alfa-Fix Central, Chinnakada as soon as you can. Corrosion keeps spreading while liquid sits on the board.

SSD and RAM upgrades

On older MacBooks with a removable SSD or memory, an upgrade is a straightforward swap. On recent MacBooks the storage chips are soldered to the logic board, so a storage upgrade is chip-level work done at Alfa-Fix Central. On Apple silicon MacBooks the memory sits in the same package as the main chip and usually can't be upgraded. Tell us your model on WhatsApp and we'll say whether an upgrade is possible for it before you bring it in.

Before you hand it over

• Back up with Time Machine or iCloud if the MacBook still starts.
• Login password and Find My. We ask for the login password and for Find My to be switched off, because some repairs can't be done or fully tested without them. If you'd rather not share the password, tell us and we'll explain what can and can't be tested.
• Our technicians open only what the repair and its testing need. Nothing on your MacBook is copied, kept or shared.
